Details
- Hand-tied bundle of white sage leaves
- Salvia apiana — native to Southern California and northern Baja Mexico
- Sourced from the mountains of Southern California
- Sustainably harvested with a focus on long-term species health
Tradition
White sage has been used in smudging traditions by many North American Indigenous peoples for centuries, primarily for ceremonial cleansing — clearing the energy of a space, person, or object. Sustainable sourcing is essential: wild populations have been over-harvested in recent years, so responsible harvest practices and farmed sage are how the species and the lands where it grows wild can be protected.
How to use
Light the tip of the bundle, let it catch flame for a few seconds, then gently blow it out so the bundle smoulders and releases smoke. Traditionally smudged with the support of an abalone shell to catch ash and embers, and a feather to waft the smoke.
Care & safety
Always smudge in a well-ventilated space. Place the smouldering bundle on a heat-safe surface — abalone shell, ceramic bowl, or stone — to catch ash and embers. Never leave a burning bundle unattended. Keep away from curtains, paper, pets, and anything flammable. To extinguish, gently press the lit end into sand, ash, or a stone surface.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place. Keep sealed if possible to preserve the aromatic oils.
