About the stone
Shungite is a black, lustrous mineraloid composed of more than 98% carbon. Found primarily near the village of Shunga in Karelia, Russia — from which it takes its name. The stone has been the subject of scientific interest for its unusual molecular structure, including documented trace amounts of fullerenes. In Karelia and the broader Russian region, shungite has a long folk-tradition history — including the centuries-old practice of placing the stone in drinking water. Tsar Peter the Great is recorded as having established shungite-treated springs near the Karelian region in the early 1700s.
In crystal tradition
In crystal tradition and Russian folk practice, shungite is long-valued for grounding and protection. The practice of placing shungite in water is centuries old in the region. Modern crystal practitioners continue this tradition — though we make no specific claims about water purification or health effects, and recommend conventional water filtration for any safety concerns.
Care
If using in water, rinse pieces well before first use. Do not use shungite to filter water from unsafe sources — use proper filtration for that. Cleanse the stones periodically by drying in sunlight.
Each piece is one of a kind. Natural variations in colour, shape, size, and pattern are part of what makes the stone what it is — the photograph shows a representative example, your piece will look slightly different.
