About Kwósel
Kwósel — meaning Star in Hawalq'emeylem — is the Indigenous jewelry and art practice of Melissa Victor. A Beader, Mother, Wife, Daughter and Granddaughter, Melissa is from Xwchíyò:m (Cheam First Nation) in S'ólh Téméxw of the Fraser River Valley, and currently resides in Mohkintsis (Calgary, Alberta) on Blackfoot and Treaty 7 territory.
The name Kwósel was born in deep connection to the language of the Xwchíyò:m people, Hawalq'emeylem, inspired by a BC Knowledge Keeper who received a pair of Melissa's beaded Delica morning star earrings. Launched in January 2023, Kwósel is Melissa's path of reconnection to her Xwchíyò:m roots — blending stories through beadwork and traditionally-harvested cedar weaving to bring those teachings to her children.
Her work has been featured in the Mothers and Matriarchy (2021) and Wasakamapiwak Collective (2023/2024) exhibitions. In February 2024 Kwósel was a featured designer at the Made in Canada runway show during New York Fashion Week with Runway7, and showcased at Paris Fashion Week through Paris Fashion Air in September 2024.
