Tradition
Sweetgrass — known as wíingaashk, sweetgrass, or holy grass — is one of the four sacred plants in many North American Indigenous traditions (alongside sage, cedar, and tobacco). Traditionally braided in three strands and smudged for prayer, blessings, and to invite good energy. The smoke is gentle and sweet — sweetgrass is often smudged after sage or cedar, where the cleansing has been done by the stronger plant and sweetgrass is welcomed in to bless the cleared space.
How to use
Light the end of the braid — sweetgrass burns less readily than sage or cedar and may need to be re-lit several times. Once smouldering, the braid releases a sweet, hay-like smoke.
Care & safety
Always smudge in a well-ventilated space. Place the smouldering bundle on a heat-safe surface — abalone shell, ceramic bowl, or stone — to catch ash and embers. Never leave a burning bundle unattended. Keep away from curtains, paper, pets, and anything flammable. To extinguish, gently press the lit end into sand, ash, or a stone surface.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place. Keep sealed if possible to preserve the aromatic oils.
