Tradition

Cedar holds deep significance in many North American Indigenous traditions, especially those of the Great Lakes regions and the Pacific Northwest. Cedar is one of the four sacred plants in many traditions (alongside sage, sweetgrass, and tobacco), and is traditionally smudged for cleansing, protection, and prayer. Locally grown Ontario cedar honours both the tradition and the land it comes from.

How to use

Light the tip of a stick and let it catch. Blow out the flame so it smoulders. Carry through your space; place on a heat-safe surface (abalone shell, ceramic bowl, or stone) when not in use.

About the maker

Founded by Dinora Garcia Guillen and her husband Rufus Glassco — who met in Oaxaca in 1994 and now live in Toronto with their two sons. During the pandemic, they opened Swan's Nest Holistic Wellness and Nature Centre in King Township, just north of Toronto. From that land, Oak Ridges Organics markets the medicinal herbs they grow and sustainably wildcraft, alongside frame drums Rufus brings to life in his drum-making workshops.

Care & safety

Light the bundle and gently blow out the flame so it smoulders. Place on a heat-safe surface (abalone shell, ceramic bowl, or stone) to catch ash and embers. Smudge in a well-ventilated space. Never leave unattended. Keep away from curtains, paper, pets, and children.

Storage

Store in a cool, dry place.
