Tradition
Syrian rue (also called African rue, Peganum harmala, espand, or harmel) has been used as a ceremonial smudge across the Middle East, North Africa, Central Asia, and parts of South Asia for centuries. Traditionally burned to cleanse spaces and as a folk protective practice — the seeds emit a distinctive crackling smoke when burned.
How to use
Use only on a non-flammable surface — sprinkle a small pinch of seeds on a hot charcoal disc or in a heat-safe burner. The seeds will pop and release smoke. Smudge the space briefly. Always use small amounts.
Care & safety
IMPORTANT: Syrian rue contains harmala alkaloids (harmaline, harmine), which are MAO inhibitors. Internal use can cause serious medical complications and is dangerous when combined with many medications, foods, and other substances. SOLD FOR EXTERNAL CEREMONIAL SMUDGE USE ONLY. Do not consume. Use small amounts only when burning. Burn in well-ventilated spaces — the smoke is psychoactive in larger quantities. Keep away from children and pets. Not recommended for those with respiratory conditions or those who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place.
