Traditional uses & properties

- An aromatic associated with consciousness and courage in many traditions
- Often used where its strength makes more sense than clove bud's refinement
History
The word 'clove' comes from the Latin clavus, meaning 'nail' — for the clove bud's resemblance to a small nail. Cloves and nutmeg were among the most precious commodities in 16th and 17th century Europe, worth more than their weight in gold and a major driver of the spice trade.
How to use
Use diluted (under 1%) in carrier oil for topical applications, or undiluted in candles, soaps, and incense.
Safety
Strong skin sensitizer — never apply undiluted to skin. Heavy dilution required for topical use. Avoid in pregnancy and on broken skin.
Storage
Store sealed in a cool, dark place. Most essential oils keep 1-3 years; citrus oils oxidize faster — best within 12 months.
