History

The bergamot orange (a hybrid citrus) is grown almost exclusively along a small stretch of the Calabrian coast in southern Italy. It has been a key ingredient in fine perfumery since the late 17th century and gives eau de cologne its distinctive lift. Earl Grey tea — flavoured with bergamot oil — was named after the British Prime Minister Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey.

Main constituents

Limonene, linalyl acetate, linalool, γ-terpinene

How to use

Add a few drops to an aromatherapy diffuser, or 1-2 drops on a tissue or cotton ball for personal inhalation. For topical use, dilute to 1-3% in a carrier oil (jojoba, fractionated coconut, or sweet almond) — about 2-9 drops per 30ml. Patch test inside the elbow before broader application.

Safety

External use only. Always dilute before applying to skin. Photosensitizing — avoid sun exposure on skin where applied for at least 12 hours. Patch test before first use. Avoid during pregnancy unless guided by a qualified aromatherapist.

Storage

Store sealed in a cool, dark place. Citrus oils oxidize faster than other essential oils — best within 12 months. Refrigeration extends shelf life.
