13 Original Clan Mothers

Jamie Sams's record of teachings she received from two Kiowa Grandmothers, Cisi Laughing Crow and Berta Broken Bow — the thirteen Clan Mothers of the medicine wheel, each a guardian of a particular gift, talent, or ability of the feminine.

Each of the thirteen Clan Mothers receives her own chapter, opening with a poem and unfolding into the story of her teachings, her totems, and the cycle of the moon she relates to. Across the book they are: Talks with Relations, Wisdom Keeper, Weighs the Truth, Looks Far Woman, Listening Woman, Storyteller, Loves All Things, She Who Heals, Setting Sun Woman, Weaves the Web, Walks Tall Woman, Gives Praise, and Becomes Her Vision. The twelfth weaves the gifts of all who came before her; the thirteenth is the guardian of transformation and transmutation. The book is structured as a year's worth of teaching — one Clan Mother per moon cycle — and is intended as a sacred path rather than a study text.

Jamie Sams

Author, teacher, and member of the Wolf Clan Teaching Lodge. Sams is of Cherokee, Seneca, Choctaw, and Mohawk ancestry on her mother's side, and French on her father's. Her teachings draw from the oral traditions she received from her two Kiowa Grandmothers, Cisi Laughing Crow and Berta Broken Bow, and from her female Elders within the Wolf Clan tradition.
